Introduction
"If children in the modern society do not learn to read, they cannot succeed in life." (Jennings,
Caldwell, & Lerner, 2014).
Reading Strategies
Our goal as educators is to prepare students to be college and career- ready. In order to do so, we must make sure all students are able to read fluently. "Without the ability to read, opportunities for academic and occupational success are severely limited. Society suffers when citizens cannot read adequately. People with low reading levels comprise many of those who drop out of high school, the unemployed, the poor, and those convicted of crimes." (Jennings, Caldwell, & Lerner, 2014).
How can Teachers Help Struggling Readers become Fluent
Readers?
There are many different ways to help students become expert readers so that they are college and career-ready. The ultimate goal of reading is comprehension, but we also know that in order for students to comprehend text, they need to be fluent readers as well. There are two groups of reading strategies that can be used to help our struggling readers. Reading fluency strategies help students with accuracy, speed, and expression. Reading comprehension strategies is the second group, which help students with understanding the text and finding the purpose in the text. These strategies also work with students becoming engaged and active in the text. There are tons of different strategies within these two groups, which you will find throughout this website. (Katie & Steve, 2009).

Struggling Readers
In order to identify who or what qualifies as a struggling reader, it is important to know about what a successful reader is. Successful readers:
-use context clues - make connections - ask questions -make notes in the margins of the text - reread for specific information -draw graphic organizers in the margins -and much more |
We then also need to know what might qualify a student to be at risk. These characteristics DO NOT immediately make a student a struggling reader. They are just signs to watch out for and be aware of. They include:
-struggle with early language development -have ADHD -live in poor neighborhoods -lack motivation to read -have dyslexia - have difficulties with vocabulary, comprehension, listening, speaking (informal or formal), or communicating through writing. Reading Interventions
What is a Reading Intervention?
A reading intervention is a supplementary program or curriculum from the one that originally exists to provide struggling readers with the help, support, and strategies they need to increase their reading levels. There are many different ways to provide reading interventions and strategies, which will be described throughout this website. The ultimate purpose of an intervention is to move struggling readers to an appropriate level of reading for their age and grade level. (Jennings,
Caldwell, & Lerner, 2014).

Factors Associated with Reading DifficultyThere are many different reasons why reading problems occur and why there are struggling readers in the classroom. Each student is unique in his or her own way and we need to take that into consideration when we are learning about our students. Students are affected by their environmental factors, which include home, school, social, and cultural aspects. From there we can also add in emotional, intelligence, intellectual, and language factors that affect a student's performance in reading and other subject areas. There are two different types of factors that reading problems can occur in, they include neurological and cognitive factors. (Jennings, Caldwell, & Lerner, 2014).
